Is It Worth It To Replace An Engine?

engine replacement

Do you have a bad engine, or an engine that’s going bad? You may be wondering what’s the best way to get back on the road ASAP. You have several options:

  • Rebuild the engine
  • Replace the engine
  • Buy a new car

Rebuilding an engine by yourself is not for the faint of heart. We don’t recommend rebuilding your engine unless you have:

  • Lots of specialized experience
  • Access to a full shop with all the tools and equipment you need

Rebuilding the engine isn’t an ideal solution for most people. So you have two viable options left: replacing the engine or buying a new car. Buying a new car is easier, but is it a wise decision? Buying a car new car is expensive, and comes with its own headaches, so maybe not.

Is it worth the time and effort to replace your engine? Our answer is a resounding yes. That is, if the rest of your vehicle is still in good shape. We have 4 great reasons why:

1. Buying A Replacement Engine Is Always Cheaper Than Buying A New Car

While a replacement engine is an expense, it’s also cheaper than buying a new (or new to you) vehicle. You can get a high quality replacement engine from us for only a few thousand dollars. If you use that money to buy a used car, chances are you’ll run into problems with that car sooner or later. That means even more expenses to worry about.

Is the rest of your vehicle is still in good shape? Dropping a replacement engine in it makes much more sense than buying a new (or new to you) car.

2. Replacing The Engine Increases The Value Of Your Car

Believe it or not, but the value of your car goes up with a new engine in it. In fact, it’s common for sellers to replace the engine to make the vehicle easier to sell. A vehicle is worth far more if you replace the engine than if you don’t. A non-running vehicle is really hard to sell, and you won’t get much for it.

Whether or not you decide to keep your vehicle, replacing the engine is a win-win situation. If you plan to sell your vehicle soon, you’ll get much more money out of it. If you plan to keep it, you’ll get to enjoy a new engine.

3. Replacing The Engine Prolongs Your Car’s Lifespan

This is pretty obvious, but it’s still a great benefit. Replacing the engine in an otherwise reliable car is a logical decision. Just ask many of our customers who have replaced their engines with ours. Their new engines gave them many years and 100k+ more miles out of their car with no repairs, aside from regular maintenance. So replacing your engine lets you keep your car for much longer with no engine issues.

4. Replacing An Engine Is Easier Than It Sounds

Contrary to popular belief, replacing an engine isn’t hard. It’s not like replacing the frame of a car, where you have to remove everything. Replacing the engine sounds a lot more complex than it really is.

Modern engines are designed to be replaced as a unit rather than disassembled and “fixed.” Believe it or not, replacing an engine is the cheapest and easiest way to get your vehicle back on the road ASAP.

How To Get The Most Value For Your Money

An engine is a huge investment. So you want to get it right the first time around. This means buying a quality replacement engine. Here are a few ways to ensure you get a good replacement engine that will last a long time:

1. Buy A Sim Tested And Inspected Engine

Building an engine is not rocket science, but it’s pretty close. It’s a project only seasoned experts could pull off successfully. When building an engine, many things could go wrong. That’s why every engine should be inspected and sim tested.

Sim testing an engine means using a machine to spin the engine at about 750 rpm. This simulation allows us to test for:

  • Proper compression
  • Proper oil pressure
  • Any unusual noises

Unfortunately, not every engine builder sim tests and/or adequately inspects their engines. You don’t have to worry about that with us. We have a state-of-the-art sim tester. We thoroughly sim test and inspect every engine we build before shipping them to our customers.

2. Buy An Engine With An Excellent Warranty

If something goes wrong with your new engine, you want to make sure it’s covered. A comprehensive warranty shows that the company stands behind its engines. In fact, we have so much confidence in our engines that we offer a 5-year, 1-million-mile warranty on all our engines.

3. Buy A Remanufactured Engine Instead Of A Used One

A remanufactured engine is much more reliable than a used engine. It’s because a good remanufactured engine has been:

  • Taken apart
  • Inspected
  • Corrected (factory issues and worn components have been repaired/replaced)
  • Rebuilt

Used engines, at best, are only inspected and tested on a superficial level. So chances are good that a used engine will fail sooner rather than later.

Used engines are a little less costly than remanufactured engines. Yet, the difference in costs isn’t usually much once you consider installation costs. Also, a used engine can fail in a few months. The cost of replacing two engines is much higher than the cost of doing one replacement with a remanufactured engine.
